Crafts For The Letter E
This month my classroom theme has been Under The Big Top. So of course, I had to do E is for Elephant! I LOVE elephants and my students ENJOYED the letter E activities we did this week. We did two crafts for the letter E. I like to keep my classroom activities simple and easy. When you have a classroom full of toddlers, simple is the better way to go. Can I get an AMEN from my fellow childcare providers?
The first crafts for the letter E were making the letter E into an elephant. The kids got a kick out of this. The second crafts for the letter E we did this week was we decorated an elephant with glitter glue. I really like these glitter pens you can get at Dollar Tree. They are perfect for little hands and the glue comes out very easily. The children placed a red glitter dot on each of the Ee’s they found on the printable.
The Letter E Activities
One of my toddler’s favorite the letter e activities this week was an elephant shape match. I used puzzle pieces from a Melissa and Doug Chunky Shape Puzzle and had my toddlers match the shape to the elephant shape card. Puzzle pieces work amazing as manipulatives, once your little ones have outgrown chunky puzzles, don’t get rid of them! Use them for table activities!
Letter E Coloring Sheet
My toddlers had fun coloring this letter E coloring sheet. If you are a fellow early education teacher you know how much kids love to color. Because of this, I like to provide lots of opportunities to color throughout our day. Coloring with crayons can strengthen little hand muscles and get them ready for writing skills later on.
I placed some letter E coloring sheet on our classroom table during arrival. Once the children arrived in our classroom for the day, they could sit down and color a letter e coloring sheet. I also placed the letter e coloring sheet on the table during naptime. Coloring pages are perfect for little ones who wake up earlier than their friends and need a quiet activity to do.
The Letter E Worksheets
One of the goals I have for my toddlers this school year is that they learn their colors. For the letter E worksheets activity, we colored each of the elephants the correct color and then, I gave the children MathLink Cubes to match the color to the paper. These MathLink Cubes are made by Learning Resources and are a wonderful classroom resource. I use these all the time for sorting, counting, one-to-one correspondence, and basic operations.
Activities With The Letter E
Have you seen this cool Popcorn Counting Activity by Learning Resources? This was such a fun addition to our table toys this week for activities with the letter e. The children would count the correct number of popcorn kernels into each popcorn tub. I placed an elephant stuffed toy next to the popcorn tubs so they could pretend to feed the elephant the popcorn kernels. They really enjoyed this activity.
Letter E Books
Our favorite letter E book this week was Where’s Ellie? by Salina Yoon. I like to read letter E books to my toddlers, and then give each child a plastic magnifying glass. We will go back through the pages to find the letter E. This is a great way for your toddlers to start recognizing letters. The magnifying glass is a fun way to keep their attention while teaching this “search and find activity.”
Here are some of my other favorite letter E books.
Elmer The Patchwork Elephant by David McKee
My “e” Sound Box by Jane Belk Moncure
The Enormous Elephant Show by Liza Charlesworth
E-mergency by Ezra Fields Meyer
Prewriting Activity
I like to include a couple of prewriting activities each week because it is important in developing fine motor skills. My toddlers really enjoyed this prewriting activity. Using prewriting worksheets can help teach the mechanics of writing, and the children start to get used to curves and angles without the struggle of forming letters correctly.
