August Theme For Toddlers To Kick Off The Best School Year
Looking for an exciting August Theme for toddlers? This year I am starting off our new school year with a fun circus unit. This circus unit is a perfect August theme for toddlers. All aboard the circus train, I have so many fun activities to do with my little ones. I can’t wait to share them with y’all.
Before I show you my classroom and all the good stuff we have going on this month, I would like to welcome anyone new to ClubbhouseKids Early Learning. My name is Hollie and I have been a childcare provider for 15 years. I have taught multiple ages, but infants and toddlers are my jam. I love creating fun, engaging units to keep toddlers busy and learning. In this blog post I will be sharing my Day At The Circus Toddler Lesson Plans, circus theme activities, and toddler songs. If you are interested in a different August Theme for toddlers check out my beach unit here. Now let’s get into my Circus Unit!
Elephant Craft For Kids
We started the week off with a fun elephant craft for kids. This handprint elephant was placed onto a circus tent printable. The circus theme art for toddlers was simple, easy, and super fun! I painted each child’s hand gray and stamped it onto the circus tent printable. They loved the feeling of the gooey paint squishing between their fingers. Have a bucket of warm sudsy water and a washcloth ready to clean their hands when they are done. Have you checked out the Dollar Tree craft section lately? They have a great variety of tempera paint colors. This is where I have been getting all my paint lately for my classroom, and where I found this perfect elephant gray color for this craftThe Circus Theme Song
My toddlers love to sing songs! We sing songs all day long in our classroom. Have you been looking for songs with circus theme? Check out this free The Circus Theme Song printable full of songs with circus theme to enjoy with your little ones.
Circus Themed Activities
Now we are getting to all the fun stuff we did this week. I love doing learning activities with my toddlers. It keeps them busy and happy all day long. We have plenty of free play and outside time as well. Click here if you would like a copy of my toddler classroom schedule.
Activities For Teaching Colors
For toddler math this week we learned about the color orange. I like to focus on one color a month. During circle time each morning we go over our Orange Flashcards and the children like to point out orange items in our room. If you are looking for more activities for teaching colors check out my monthly circle time printables.
The Color Orange Worksheet
My toddlers also decorated an orange identifation printable by placing an orange sticker on each item. Placing stickers is a great fine motor skill for toddlers. Anytime you can pull out stickers to use with an activity, you little ones are going to love it! My favorite place to find affordable and cute stickers for my toddlers is at the Dollar Tree or Target Dollar Spot.
Circus Math Activities
We also are working on numbers 1-3. We did a counting activity where we counted the circus tickets and glued them next to the correct numeral. The kids also got to tear some real circus tickets and place them into our ticket collector. I found these tickets at the Dollar Tree and they were a huge success. I would tell the children how many tickets they needed and they would tear the correct number off and place it into the bucket.
Activities For Gross Motor Skills
I’m always trying to find activities for gross motor skills to add into our day. I like to keep my toddlers up and moving! Our favorite gross motor activity from this week was Knock Down Towers! Using small cups the children and I build towers. This was such a great activity to work on those fine and gross motor skills. Once our tower were built, they would throw a ball at the tower to knock it down! They could have played this for hours. I love when the simplest activity turns out to be a favorite.
Favorite Circus Books

I am so lucky to have a group of toddlers that love listening to books. We read a book during circle time, before nap, and after nap. I like to focus on about 5 books a week and reread them all week long. Toddlers love repetition and can learn vocabulary, social skills and so much more from listening to books over and over again. Here are our favorite circus books from this week!
All Aboard The Circus McGurkus by Dr Suess
Clifford at the Circus by Norman Bridwell
If I Ran The Circus by Dr Suess
Harold’s Circus by Crockett Johnson
At the Carnival by Hunter Reid and Stephanie Hinton
