Heart Shape Activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Hearts are more than just a symbol of love; they’re a fantastic shape for early learners to explore! Introducing shapes to toddlers and preschoolers lays the foundation for geometry, spatial awareness, and fine motor skills. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s the perfect time to focus on heart-shaped activities that are engaging, hands-on, and fun for young learners. Here are three simple and creative heart shape activities that teachers can easily implement in the classroom.

1. Heart Shape Sorting Station

Set up a sorting activity with hearts of different sizes, colors, and textures. Provide students with baskets or containers labeled by size (small, medium, large) or color. Encourage them to sort the hearts into the correct baskets. This activity promotes shape recognition, categorization skills, and fine motor development as children handle the hearts.

2. Heart Shape Collage

Provide students with pre-cut hearts in different sizes and materials, such as construction paper, foil, and patterned scrapbook paper. Let them glue the hearts onto a large sheet of paper to create a unique heart collage. Encourage them to layer the hearts to explore overlapping shapes and textures.

3. Heart Shape Movement Game

Create heart shapes on the floor using colored tape. Assign each heart a specific movement, such as jumping, hopping, or spinning. Call out a movement and have students find a heart on the floor to stand on before performing the action. This gross motor activity keeps students active while reinforcing their understanding of the heart shape.
