Exploring Preschool Shapes with Fun and Creative Activities
As a preschool teacher, I know the importance of building a strong math foundation from a young age. Preschool shapes are fundamental to early math concepts and can be introduced in fun and creative ways. In this blog post, I will share some of my favorite ways to teach shapes to preschoolers. All the fun activities you see can be printed here.
Let’s Go On A Shape Hunt
One of my favorite activities to teach shapes is the Shape Hunt. It can be done indoors or outdoors and is a great way to get preschoolers moving while learning. I place shape flashcards all over our learning area and then call out a shape. The children run around the room, looking for that shape. This activity develops shape recognition and helps children learn how to identify shapes in real-life objects.
Shape Playdough Mats
Another activity that preschoolers love is using Shape Playdough Mats. This activity encourages children to use their fine motor skills to manipulate playdough into different shapes. It’s great for developing hand-eye coordination and allows children to explore shapes independently.
Preschool Math Center
A Math Center with shape-related activities is another wonderful way to engage preschoolers in exploring shapes. Activities like sorting shapes, matching shapes, and creating patterns with shapes help children understand the attributes of each shape.
Shape Attributes
When teaching shapes, it’s important to explain shape attributes such as sides, corners, and size. You can use real-life examples to help children understand shape attributes. For instance, a rectangle has four sides, four corners, and two long and two short sides. It’s also important to use enrichment activities to support children’s understanding of shapes: let them practice drawing or tracing shapes, creating shapes with objects, or cutting shapes out with scissors.
Favorite Shape Learning Toys
Shape learning toys are great for hands-on fun. Here are some of my favorite learning toys and manipulatives that I use in my classroom and math center.
